Address Cosmetic Flaws in a Single Visit with Dental Bonding

For smiles affected by chips, cracks, or other aesthetic issues, dental bonding can offer a dramatic transformation in a single office visit. Bonding is one of the simplest and least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. At our office in Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Tim Clavin applies a composite resin to conceal imperfections. He can shade the resin to precisely match the color of your teeth so the treatment blends seamlessly.

Dental bonding can cover a chip in your tooth in a way that looks completely natural.

Candidates for Dental Bonding

A bonding treatment can address a range of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Discoloration
  • Gaps
  • Disproportionate teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Minor misalignment

In general, dental bonding is more effective for minor to moderate aesthetic concerns. If you require more extensive alterations, you may experience better results with porcelain veneers or another treatment. You can discuss your goals and needs with Dr. Clavin during your initial consultation.

The Procedure

During the appointment, Dr. Clavin will use a guide to select the shade of resin most similar to your natural tooth color. Then, he will etch the surface of the tooth and apply a conditioning liquid. This process helps the bonding material adhere more effectively.

Dental bonding is one of the simplest and least expensive treatment options in cosmetic dentistry.

Once your tooth is prepared, Dr. Clavin will apply the composite resin and mold it to the proper shape. Then he will use a special light to harden the material. Next, he will perform any necessary trimming and polishing. This process typically takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the number of teeth you wish to treat.

Benefits of Bonding

Both porcelain veneers and dental crowns involve multiple visits and require Dr. Clavin to remove a significant amount of healthy tooth enamel. Dental bonding is generally completed in a single visit to our office and requires little to no enamel removal. In most cases, patients do not need any anesthesia to undergo bonding.

Many patients choose to undergo bonding as a means of determining whether they would eventually like to receive veneers. Although veneers are a costlier treatment, they can provide longer-lasting results that can be crafted to achieve an even more natural-looking appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Clavin can help decide which treatment is best for you.

Maintaining Your Results

While composite resin is effective for addressing minor cosmetic issues, it is not as strong or as stain-resistant as dental porcelain. Habits such as biting your nails or chewing on ice can damage the material and cause chips and cracks. It is also best to abstain from tobacco and avoid foods such as tomato sauce, mustard, red wine, and coffee in order to avoid staining the bonding material. Proper daily hygiene can also help prolong the effects of bonding.
